Bird Diversity in Rehabilitated Tanks: Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts

. July 28, 2026

This book highlights the remarkable bird diversity supported by small irrigation tanks in the Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu. These tanks have been rehabilitated through measures such as removing invasive species, restoring feeder channels, deepening tank beds, strengthening bunds, constructing sluices, and planting trees to improve water availability and habitat quality. Bird surveys conducted during February and March 2024, coinciding with the northward migration of Arctic and sub-Arctic species, recorded 122 bird species. Based on field studies by researchers from BNHS, MBMT, and PRADAN, the book presents each species with identification notes, distribution, habitat, breeding origins, migratory status, IUCN conservation status, and photographs. It is a practical reference for birdwatchers, students, researchers, and conservation practitioners.
