Faunal Diversity in Tank Ecosystems

This book documents the rich faunal diversity associated with the irrigation tank ecosystems of Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu. These centuries-old, community-managed water systems function not only as sources of irrigation but also as dynamic agro-wetland ecosystems supporting diverse aquatic, semi-aquatic, and terrestrial wildlife. The study records 140 faunal species, with special emphasis on insects, the most diverse and ecologically significant group, alongside molluscs, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. It also includes a dedicated section on crop-raiding animals inhabiting Prosopis-infested tank beds and the economic losses they cause to farmers. As the third volume in PRADAN’s Tank Ecosystem Studies series, this book complements the earlier volumes on floral and bird diversity, providing a comprehensive understanding of tank ecosystems and their ecological significance.
