Our Target: 100 families

The Global Hunger Index ranks India 100 out of the world’s 120 hungriest countries.*
Despite feeding the nation themselves, small landholders do not have year-round food security in India. In many villages of Central and Eastern India, farming is restricted to the monsoon season, and families have barely enough food to last them 5-6 months.

Dwarka Bai: New agricultural practices ensure food security

Sawarjhodi village, Block: Paraswada, Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh

Dwarka Bai remembers the days of desperate dependency on the forest for food security. The production from the household’s 3-acre farm was not sufficient to feed everyone in her extended family. The harvest, every November, did not bring her joy.

PRADAN started working in this tribal village in the middle of a dense forest in 2009. Through extensive training and hand-holding support, farmers like Dwarka were skilled on scientific agricultural practices in both rice cultivation for food security and cash crop vegetable cultivation. Through System of Root Intensification (SRI) practices, seed rates for paddy came down from 50 kg to 5 kg for 3 acres. Production more than doubled from 16 quintals to 41 quintals. The harvest season now is a period she looks forward to. Her family not only has year-round food security but sells the extra produce in the market.
